10 Quranic Verses that Align with Modern Science
The Al Qur'an, as the holy book of Muslims, contains many verses that can be interpreted in line with the discoveries of modern science, although its main purpose is for moral and spiritual guidance. The following are several verses that are often associated with concepts in modern science.
Formation of the Fetus
(Al-Mu'minun 23:13-14)
"Then We made the semen into a clot of blood, and We made the clot of blood into a clot of flesh, and We made the lump of flesh into bones, then We wrapped the bones in flesh."
Expansion of the Universe
(Adh-Dhariyat 51:47)
"And the heavens We built with (Our) power and indeed We truly expanded them."
This is in line with the Big Bang theory which states that the universe has continued to expand since its inception.
Separation of Heaven and Earth
(Al-Anbiya 21:30)
"And do the disbelievers not know that the heavens and the earth were once one whole, then We separated the two..."
This verse can be interpreted as implying the separation of matter that formed the heavens and the earth, similar to what is explained in the nebular theory of planetary formation.
Atmospheric Protection
(Al-Anbiya 21:32)
"And We made the sky a safe roof..."
This verse can be seen as referring to the Earth's atmosphere which protects living things from harmful external radiation.
The Darkness of the Deep Ocean
(An-Nur 24:40)
"Or (the condition of the disbeliever) is like darkness in a deep sea, which is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds; overlapping darkness..."
The explanation of the layer of darkness in the sea is in line with the phenomenon of marine zonation known in oceanography
Water Cycle
(Al-Mu'minun 23:18)
"And We sent down water of a certain size from the sky, then We placed it on the earth, and indeed We were truly able to remove it."
This verse reflects an understanding of the hydrological cycle of water on Earth.
Paired Creation
(Adz-Dzariyat 51:49)
"And We created everything in pairs so that you may remember the greatness of Allah."
This suggests that many things in life are created in the form of pairs, in line with the biological concept of sexual reproduction.
Ecosystem Balance
(Ar-Rahman 55:7-9)
"And the heavens, He lifted them up and He established the scales, so that you do not exceed the limit in weighing. And establish the scales fairly and do not reduce the balance."
This verse can be interpreted as the principle of balance in the ecosystem.
Sea Barriers
(Ar-Rahman 55:19-20)
"He let two seas flow which both then met; between them there was a boundary that neither crossed."
This reflects the halocline and thermocline phenomena where two water masses meet but do not mix.
Iron from Beyond Earth
(Al-Hadid 57:25)
"And We sent down iron in which there is great strength and various benefits for humans..."
This verse can be interpreted as an allusion that iron (meteorites) come from outside the Earth, a fact known in geology and astronomy. These verses provide examples of how some parts of the Qur'an can be viewed as being in line with modern scientific understanding.
However, such interpretations are always subjective and depend on individual viewpoints as well as advances in science.
